Pixar’s Latest INSIDE OUT Trailer; Connection to Cranium Command?

December 10, 2014 Blog 2 Comments

Pixar Animation Studios has just released another trailer for their latest film, “INSIDE OUT“, which is set to release on June 19th, 2015— and we here at The Tiara Talk Show are VERY excited!

The scene that is featured in this trailer was one audiences of the 2013 D23 Expo Animation Presentation got to see in early storyboard format. As a lucky member of that audience, I can tell you the scene is just as funny and entertaining as it was when I first saw it last year. I have very high hopes for this film, especially since Pete Docter is attached to the project as director.

The description of the trailer gives a little more information about the film, including a story synopsis:

From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

I did notice that one of the posters for “INSIDE OUT” (pictured on the bottom) is very similar to another logo for a former Walt Disney World attraction/film called CRANIUM COMMAND (pictured on the top), which resided in the Wonders of Life pavilion at EPCOT.

For those who have never experienced the CRANIUM COMMAND attraction, here’s a small synopsis: Buzzy, an amateur brain pilot, has to pilot the brain of a 12 year-old boy through a regular day of school where he bumps into bullies and meets his crush, all while keeping all of the body part characters- the Heart (played by Dana Carvey & Kevin Nealon), Stomach (played by George Wendt), Left Brain (played by Charles Grodin), Right Brain (played by Jon Lovitz) & Adrenal Gland (played by Bobcat Goldthwait)- in check to make the day go smoothly and successfully.

It was a great attraction; you can view it in its entirety here:

Believe it or not, both films have very similar aspects to them:

  • Riley’s emotions control her from Headquarters , which located in her head, aka brain/Buzzy and the audience, who are also located in the brain, must help Bobby get through a regular day of school.
  • Riley’s Emotions include Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness and Disgust/Buzzy controls all parts of the body, including characters like the Left Brain (has similar qualities to Anger & Disgust) and the Right Brain (has similar qualities to Joy and Fear).
  • Riley’s not the only person who has these Emotions- her parents have them too!/In the pre-show segment, we see many other heads which need to be controlled by other brain pilots who are just like Buzzy.
  • And… Pete Docter is directing “INSIDE OUT”; but did you know he worked on Cranium Command as an animator!?

I’m sure there will be plenty more similarities, as well as many differences, to the Cranium Command attraction and Pixar’s INSIDE OUT; I just hope that if “Inside Out” becomes a big hit (which I’m sure it will!), there might be a chance for its characters to take the place of Buzzy and his friends at Cranium Command and breathe in new life to the abandoned Wonders of Life pavilion in EPCOT (which only opens for the Food & Wine Festival).

Be sure to check out our interview with the director of CRANIUM COMMAND, Jerry Rees (TRON, BACK TO NEVERLAND) & pre-show animation director, Gary Trousdale (THE LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) here:
